A study by IARC published on 7 July 2025 analyzed over 1,100 cases of colorectal cancer, highlighting specific genetic mutations more common in patients under the age of 40. Some of these mutations are linked to the presence of particular gut bacteria, suggesting a direct role of the microbiome in the early onset of cancer.

The mutational signatures observed differ from those in older patients, opening new diagnostic hypotheses. The study emphasizes the opportunity to develop personalized screening pathways and more sensitive molecular tests for young individuals, who are often excluded from standard prevention programs.
