January marks Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. In recognition of this, the Capital Area Cancer Society of Iceland, in collaboration with the Cancer Screening Coordination Centre and other stakeholders, launched a campaign to promote cervical screening. The campaign specifically targeted younger women and women with non-Icelandic citizenship — groups that statistics show are less likely to attend cervical cancer screening than the cervical screening population.
The aim of the campaign was to foster positive conversations around cervical screening and to encourage women to attend screening promptly when they receive an invitation, rather than postponing it. The campaign highlights that cervical screening is a simple, low-effort procedure, that regular participation can save lives, and that every individual’s participation matters.
These messages were delivered in a light-hearted and empowering manner, portraying women as everyday heroes who routinely manage minor inconveniences and hassles. In comparison, attending cervical screening is a piece of cake!
