EUCanScreen Task 6.5

At the German Cancer Congress (18–21 February 2026), the largest and oldest cancer conference in the German-speaking region, EUCanScreen Task 6.5 presented current work on cancer screening for people with intellectual disabilities.

The session was chaired by Andreas Berger (Königin Herzberge Hospital Berlin) and Nora Tabea Sibert (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf).

  • Mari Nygård (Cancer Registry of Norway) presented on what Nordic registry data can tell us about cancer incidence and screening participation among people with intellectual disabilities.
  • Carmen Koko (German Cancer Society) presented key milestones of Task 6.5, including:

– Results of a comprehensive scoping review on the current state of research on cancer screening in people with intellectual disabilities
– The Turin Memorandum, promoting stronger equity commitments in organised screening programmes
– Ongoing work on adapting and translating accessible screening information (Easy Read formats) to different national contexts across Europe.

Additional contributions in the session were provided by Thomas Seufferlein (Former President and Board Member of the German Cancer Society; Ulm University) and Tanja Sappok (Bielefeld University).

 

17 Partners

Work Package 6.5 is led by the German Cancer Society (@Christoph Kowalski and @Carmen Koko) and involves 17 partner institutions from 11 countries within EUCanScreen.

The congress is jointly organised by the German Cancer Society and the German Cancer Aid and attracted 12,500 participants in 2026.
