Online Meeting On Risk Stratified Cervical Screening Held On Apr1

Attended by Researchers From all Over the World

On 1 April, 2026, within the periodic meeting of EUCanScreen WP9 Task 9.3 on risk-stratified cervical cancer screening, an online session was held bringing together leading international experts to discuss current evidence, implementation experiences, and future directions in risk-stratified approaches to cervical cancer screening.

The meeting highlighted the strong global relevance of this topic, with contributions from researchers and experts from Europe and the United States, representing a wide range of guideline development activities and research initiatives.

The session opened with an introduction by Paola Mantellini, followed by a series of presentations focused on risk-stratified cervical cancer screening protocols and approaches in different settings.

Global Perspectives on Cervical Screening and Triage Protocols

Marc Arbyn and Sharon Dhillon outlined global perspectives on cervical screening and triage protocols, setting the stage for a broader exchange. Building on this, speakers presented national and regional experiences. Miriam Elfström described the Swedish implementation of self-sampling and HPV genotyping within a risk-stratified screening framework. Annarosa Del Mistro presented the Italian approach, focusing on individual risk stratification based on HPV vaccination status and genotyping. Nicolas Wentzensen discussed the US perspective, centred on the “equal risk, equal management” principle. Finally, Iacopo Baussano and Andrea Gini illustrated ongoing work on integrating risk stratification into European guideline development within EC-CvC activities.

In addition, preliminary results from WP9 activities, including the survey, interviews, and scoping review, were presented, contributing to a shared understanding of the current state of the art within EUCanScreen WP9.

The session confirmed the strong international interest in risk-stratified cervical screening and the importance of continued exchange among experts to support the development of more tailored and evidence-informed screening strategies.
