AI in Mammography Screening

AI in Mammography screening

Train-the-Trainer

As part of the EUCanScreen project, RSYD/CAI-X has developed and delivered a train-the-trainer programme focusing on the use of artificial intelligence in breast cancer screening. The aim of the programme was to build participants’ competencies so they can train other healthcare professionals in both understanding and practical application of AI in screening practice, and to support our Latvian partners in both implementing AI and disseminating and teaching about its use.

The programme was based on concrete Danish experiences, including insights into the screening programme and workflows regarding AI in breast cancer screening. In addition, experiences from clinical practice and research projects were incorporated, as well as implementation experiences from the Capital Region of Denmark, where AI is already being used in mammography screening.

A central part of the work was to address both the human and regulatory aspects of using AI, including ethics, accountability, deskilling, and understanding of applicable legislation such as the MDR and the AI Act. Furthermore, methods for evaluating AI solutions in clinical practice were addressed, including the use of the MAS-AI framework.

As an outcome, the participants – including our Latvian EUCanScreen colleagues Ilze Engele, Justine Deicmane, Anete Purvlīce, Evija Asere, and Anna Mutjanko – have developed their own training programmes that will be used in the mammography training programmes later this year and early next year. The programme has thus helped strengthen the foundation for a more consistent, responsible, and practice-oriented use of AI in breast cancer screening across countries and healthcare systems.
