The SIUrO National Congress in Turin

On 3 October, Lombardy Region presented EUCanScreen at the SIUrO National Congress in Turin, during the Talk Show “Prevenzione in Uro Oncologia”.
The contribution focused on the experience developed by Lombardy Region and ATS Pavia within EUCanScreen, with particular attention to more personalised, appropriate and equitable cancer screening pathways.

Prostate Cancer

A central theme was the development of an organised approach to prostate cancer screening based on individual risk stratification. The Lombardy model combines the identification of the target population through regional health information systems, structured collection of individual risk factors, differentiated diagnostic pathways according to risk profile, integration of PSA with advanced diagnostic tools, and digital systems supporting information, participation and monitoring.

The Objective

This approach reflects a broader shift from screening understood as the simple availability of a test to screening as a complete pathway. The objective is to identify the people who may benefit most from early diagnosis, while reducing unnecessary diagnostic procedures, overdiagnosis and overtreatment, and ensuring more equitable access to preventive pathways.

Social and Communication Barriers

The presentation also highlighted the Lombardy experience with the PRECEDE PROCEED method, applied to cancer screening as a structured approach for identifying organisational, social and communication barriers that may influence participation in screening programmes and for defining evidence based corrective interventions. The method has been presented within EUCanScreen as a potentially transferable experience for other European contexts.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

Another key element is the integration between scientific evidence and organisational models. The Lombardy experience is based on multidisciplinary collaboration and on the use of defined eligibility criteria, shared diagnostic pathways, integration between health information systems and digital tools, and monitoring of process and outcome indicators. ATS Pavia plays a central role in linking regional planning with territorial implementation, supporting quality, uniformity and proximity in service delivery.

Exchanging Experiences across Europe

Through EUCanScreen, these experiences contribute to the exchange of organisational models and methodological approaches across Europe, supporting the development of cancer screening programmes that are increasingly personalised, sustainable and focused on reducing inequalities.
