Managing Interstitial Lung Abnormalities (ILA)

Significant Incidental Findings

As the National Lung Cancer Screening Programme in the Czech Republic continues to evolve, the focus is expanding beyond tumor detection to the management of significant incidental findings. Specifically, the Czech screening framework is currently developing recommended clinical guidelines for Interstitial Lung Abnormalities (ILA) to ensure standardized care for patients identified during Low-Dose CT (LDCT) scans.

Intersticial Lung Abnormalities

Intersticial Lung Abnormalities are CT findings that may correspond to Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) in individuals who are currently asymptomatic. In lung cancer screening cohorts globally, the prevalence of ILA is estimated at 3–10 %, making these findings even more frequent than lung cancer itself.

Recent Data

Recent data from the National Screening Centre (ÚZIS ČR) provides a clear foundation for these new guidelines. Between January 2023 and August 2025, out of 16,995 patients who underwent baseline LDCT examinations, 72 % (12,226 patients) had at least one incidental finding recorded.

Specifically regarding lung health and comorbidities:

3 % of patients were diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis.
27 % presented with pulmonary emphysema.
9 % showed signs of bronchiectasis.
55 % were found to have coronary artery calcification.

Protocols

The Czech Republic’s initiative to establish formal ILA management protocols ensures that patients at risk of progression receive timely monitoring.

About the “Turn Your Back on Cancer” Campaign

The campaign ran from November 2025 to March 2026 and aimed at raising awareness of the possibilities of population-based cancer screening programmes.

Communication Strategy

A comprehensive communication strategy was implemented to integrate the topic of cancer screening into the public sphere. Initial phase focused on the online environment and social networks was followed by a massive digital campaign designed to both educate the audience and motivate direct action.

A Public Priority

Through a wave of television spots and print media, prevention was positioned as a public priority. To maximize the campaign’s reach, a network of medical professionals and public figures was engaged to transform screening into a nationwide challenge.

The European Union

The campaign was created with the support of the European Union and follows the long-term strategy of the Ministry of Health in the field of prevention and early detection of diseases. “We want health to be taken care of before problems arise, and for prevention to become a regular part of life. If we approach it in time, we can live fully and really show cancer our back,” adds Karel Hejduk, the director of National Screening Center.

Main Screening Programmes

The campaign drew attention to the five main screening programmes in the Czech Republic focused on:

breast cancer
cervical cancer
colorectal cancer
lung cancer
prostate cancer

Participation

Increase in willingness to participate in screening and in participation itself was observed. Physician engagement in offering the programmes has risen.

Evaluation

IARC announces the evaluation of tris (chloropropyl) phosphate, butyraldehyde and cumyl hydroperoxide. Tris (chloropropyl) phosphate is classified as probably carcinogenic to humans, while the other two substances are classified as possibly carcinogenic.

Experimental and Mechanistic Data

Evidence in humans is considered inadequate, but experimental and mechanistic data support the classifications. These substances are used in industrial contexts, making the findings relevant for prevention and regulation.

Digital Health in the Czech Republic: A Mobile Approach to Preventive Care

A Dedicated Mobile Application

The Czech Republic is advancing its digital healthcare landscape with a dedicated mobile application designed to put preventive care directly into the hands of its citizens.

New Version

The application has been transformed from the previous version, which was created during the Covid 19 pandemic, when it was used to store, display and verify the validity of European COVID-19 certificates. Since then, the app has gradually developed in synergy with the development of healthcare electronization, especially the development of central services and the development of standardization. By centralizing medical data, the platform aims to increase screening participation and simplify health management for individuals.

Key Features

The latest update provides users with a record of their medical history. Key features include:

Screening and prevention tracking: Users can view a clear history of their completed oncological screenings and regular preventive check-ups with GPs, dentists, or gynecologists.
Family health management: The app allows parents to monitor the preventive care schedules for their children under the age of 18.

Notification feature is planned to be introduced in future updates – users will receive automated alerts when they become eligible for a screening.

The data is sourced from the National Registry of Reimbursed Health Services and is updated semi-annually to ensure accuracy.

Combining Technologies

By combining mobile technology with robust backend data sharing, the Czech healthcare system is making it easier than ever for citizens to stay on top of their preventive care.

External Researcher for WP5 in EUCanScreen Project

Project Overview

We are seeking a qualified and experienced external researcher for the Joint Action project focused on Cancer Screening (WP5). The project, which began 22 months ago, aims to assure sustainable implementation of high-quality screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, as well as investigate implementation of screening programmes for lung, prostate and stomach cancer. Cancer represents a significant portion of the disease burden in Europe, much of which is preventable.

Cancer Risk Factors

The EUCanScreen project is designed to address this challenge by supporting strategies and policies that aim to reduce the burden of cancer, focusing on both personal and societal risk factors. The Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan has called for a new EU-Supported Cancer Screening Scheme to ensure high performance of cancer screening programmes across all Member States (MS). The general objective of EUCanScreen is to assure sustainable implementation of high-quality screening for breast, cervical and colorectal cancers, as well as implementation of the recently recommended screening programmes – for lung, prostate and gastric cancers. EUCanScreen will facilitate the reduction of cancer burden and achieving equity across the EU.

Senior Expert

The senior expert should have a PhD or LLM in law and extensive experience in data protection, health data governance and ELSI aspects of data‑driven health research, with a substantial part of this experience acquired in European collaborative projects in the biomedical field. The expert is expected to be knowledgeable about compliance, responsible data use, and EU and national frameworks in oncology.

Key Responsibilities

Main task:

The main task will involve quality assurance and analysis of the legal and ethical framework related to an already conducted cross-European survey. This task requires outstanding legal qualifications, with a particular focus on Spanish law across the Spanish health regions. The task will furthermore involve cross-European data analysis, requiring excellent knowledge of EU health data legislation and plans.

Assessment of data‑driven cancer projects:

The expert must demonstrate solid experience in assessing large‑scale health research projects based on cancer data, including federated repositories and multi‑centre or cross‑border infrastructures. This includes designing and applying risk analysis methods, DPIAs and broader data governance assessments that are tailored to cancer use cases (e.g. longitudinal data collections, multi‑modal data integration, secondary use of cancer data). The expert should be able to translate these assessments into recommendations that can be adopted by hospital partners, research centres and industry within the consortium.

ELSI framework for cancer data sharing:

The role requires proven ability to design, implement and monitor ELSI frameworks specifically adapted to cancer screening research and innovation. This includes defining ethical and legal governance arrangements for data acquisition, annotation, sharing and reuse. The expert should be able to communicate with ethics committees, data protection officers and clinical governance bodies as needed, and to provide clear, practical recommendations.

Expertise on European projects and EHDS‑relevant initiatives:

The senior expert should have a track record of participation in, or support to, European research and innovation projects in the area of oncology or health data platforms, ideally including roles in ELSI, data governance or regulatory work packages. Experience with pan‑European repositories or federated infrastructures built under EU‑funded initiatives is particularly relevant. The expert should also be familiar with the evolving framework for European data spaces and the European Health Data Space, and able to operationalise concepts such as secure processing environments, data altruism and cross‑border secondary use of imaging data in the context of European projects.

Governmental, institutional and multi‑stakeholder support:

The expert is expected to bring experience in advising or supporting public authorities, regulatory bodies or professional societies on issues related to digital health or health data governance. This may involve experience from participation in expert groups or advisory boards at national or European level, as well as contributions to guidelines or model frameworks for the use of health data in research and clinical practice. Experience in accompanying universities, research hospitals and innovation hubs in the implementation of compliance models and governance structures for cancer projects, including training and capacity‑building activities for clinicians, researchers and technical staff, is considered an asset.

Qualifications and Requirements

Advanced academic qualifications, including a PhD or LLM, in law. As a substantial amount of the legal research will focus on Spain, applicants with a Spanish law degree will be prioritized.
Experience from large-scale, collaborative EU funded projects (e.g., Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, FP7).
Proven ability to deliver projects within scope, budget, and timeline constraints.
Strong record of working with cross-functional, multinational teams, including academics, technologists, and policymakers, ensuring effective communication and project execution.
Full professional proficiency in English (C2 level), enabling effective communication, reporting, and stakeholder engagement.
Experience in preparing comprehensive documentation and delivering presentations to diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments.
Prior involvement in health or medical education projects.

New European Screening Recommendations Reflect the Impact of HPV Vaccination on Population Risk

IARC announces updated European recommendations on cervical cancer screening at EUROGIN 2026. The recommendations introduce tailored strategies for vaccinated populations.

Vaccination

For cohorts with high vaccination coverage, screening intervals can be extended to ten years after a negative HPV test. For populations with lower coverage, standard approaches remain in place. The guidance is informed by modelling of multiple screening strategies. These updates represent a shift toward risk-based screening approaches.

HSE Expands Bowel Screening

116,000 More People Eligible as HSE Expands Bowel Screening to Ages 57 and 71

BowelScreen Age Range

This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, HSE BowelScreen, Ireland’s free bowel screening programme has announced the fourth expansion of its eligible age range since 2023.

From 1 April 2026, the HSE is offering screening to everyone aged between 57 and 71, extending the previous age range of 58-70 by two years. This means that 49,000* people aged 57 and 67,500* people aged 71 will be invited over the next two years.

Over time, the HSE will expand the screening programme to people aged 55 to 74.
