Screening Goes to School in Reggio Emilia

Screening Programmes in a Clear and Accessible Way

Since 2023, educational sessions have been organised in literacy schools across the Reggio Emilia area for learners with A1 and A2 language proficiency levels. The initiative aims to explain screening programmes in a clear and accessible way, providing information on why screening is important, how to access programmes, how often to participate and the benefits of prevention.

An Opportunity for Direct Dialogue

While screening programmes have provided materials translated into different languages since 2007, these sessions offer something more. They create an opportunity for direct dialogue, allowing participants to ask questions, clarify doubts and discuss possible barriers to participation, whether organisational, linguistic or cultural.

Local Communities

Literacy schools are particularly valuable settings for engaging with local communities. Participants are often highly interested and receptive, while the presence of teachers and cultural mediators helps facilitate communication and creates a supportive environment that promotes prevention awareness and encourages participation.

Screening Services Closer to Everyone

During the 2024/2025 academic year, 190 people took part in the sessions, including 158 girls and 32 boys. In 2025/2026, participation decreased to 131 learners, with a more balanced gender distribution of 77 girls and 54 boys.
Informing, listening and creating opportunities for dialogue can help make prevention more accessible and bring screening services closer to everyone.
