Risk-Stratified Cancer Screening: Italy's Contribution to EUCanScreen

Adapting cervical screening pathways to individual risk factors

Risk Stratified Cancer Screening Italy's Contribution to EUCanScreen

Work Package 9 (WP9)

Italy is contributing to the development of risk-stratified cancer screening in Europe through its experience in adapting cervical screening pathways to individual risk factors. As part of EUCanScreen Work Package 9, this approach offers an opportunity to evaluate an innovative screening strategy and share the lessons learned with other European countries.

In this video interview, Paolo Giorgi Rossi, Director of the Epidemiology Service at AUSL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia and Scientific Coordinator of EUCanScreen Tasks 9.2 and 9.3, explains the model adopted in Italy and the opportunities for mutual learning offered by the EUCanScreen Joint Action.

Adapting Cervical Cancer Screening to Individual Risk

Italy was the first country to introduce differentiated cervical cancer screening pathways based on HPV vaccination, distinguishing between women vaccinated at a young age, before their first sexual intercourse, and those who were not vaccinated or received the vaccine later.

By taking into account the different levels of risk associated with these vaccination profiles, screening pathways can be adapted accordingly. The Italian experience is among the first examples worldwide of individual-level risk stratification in cervical cancer screening.

EUCanScreen: Evaluating Experiences and Sharing Knowledge

Through EUCanScreen Work Package 9, the Italian approach can be evaluated and its findings shared with other European countries.

Italy also benefits from the exchange, learning from risk stratification strategies explored in other European countries, including those based on HPV genotyping, which are expected to be introduced into Italian screening programmes in the coming years.

By bringing together different national experiences, the Joint Action creates opportunities for mutual learning and the continuous improvement of cancer screening programmes across Europe.

Different experiences, shared knowledge: improving cancer screening together.
