About the Course

Breast cancer screening requires highly skilled radiographers who are able to obtain high-quality mammographic images while ensuring patient comfort and safety. This course provides a structured approach to mammography positioning, image quality optimisation, patient communication, ergonomics, quality assurance, and emerging technologies used in breast imaging.

The course combines theoretical teaching with extensive practical training. Participants will progressively develop their positioning skills through peer-to-peer practice, simulation exercises, image review sessions, and supervised hands-on training. Practical sessions will include positioning practice on fellow participants and breast models where appropriate. Throughout the course, participants will receive continuous feedback from faculty to support skill development and image quality improvement.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Understand the role of the radiographer within a breast cancer screening programme
• Apply correct positioning techniques for standard projections — standard craniocaudal (CC) and mediolateral oblique (MLO) projections and additional mammographic views when indicated
• Recognise common positioning errors and implement corrective actions
• Assess mammographic image quality using established quality criteria
• Communicate effectively with women attending breast cancer screening
• Apply ergonomic principles during mammography examinations
• Understand the principles of mammography physics, quality assurance, and radiation protection
• Recognise the role of artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in breast imaging
• Perform standard mammography examinations independently and safely

About the Course

Breast cancer screening programmes across Europe differ in their organisation, quality assurance (QA) systems, reading strategies, and training frameworks. This course provides a structured and systematic approach to screening mammography, combining European standards and guidelines with theoretical lectures, hands-on workstation training, radiologic-pathologic correlation, supplementary screening, and artificial intelligence (AI). The course is designed to promote harmonisation and support high-quality breast cancer screening practice across Europe.

Each course day combines theoretical and practical training components. Theoretical sessions include lectures and interactive discussions covering key aspects of breast cancer screening, quality assurance, image interpretation, and emerging technologies. Practical training consists of workstation-based image reading and case discussions. During these sessions, participants will be divided into two groups for rotational workstation training. Each participant will independently interpret screening mammography cases at an individual workstation, followed by faculty-led case discussions incorporating radiologic-pathologic correlation and diagnostic follow-up.

Short Description of the Course

The Course aims to provide accepted participants with the pedagogic skills to be able to instruct beginners in colonoscopy during performing live endoscopic procedures. It provides a framework for effective teaching of endoscopy and emphasises the importance of conscious competence of one's own colonoscopy technique when instructing others. The course is intensive, interactive, and practical.

Venue

Why should practising Colonoscopists apply?

The main reason for the above is observed generally a rather poor quality of teaching colonoscopy technique existing in most European countries. Large cohorts of current endoscopists had either no structured training or were just softly supervised (frequently with endoscope taken by the "teacher" when first difficulties occur). The most important negative outcomes of poor quality of colonoscopy are:

• Delayed diagnosis of cancer
• Failure to prevent cancer during screening procedure
• Increase of the risk of complications such as perforation and bleeding
• Incomplete resection of potentially curable precancerous lesions
• Increase of unnecessary procedures incurring higher costs for the health care system

There is no registration fee for Participants. Travel expenses (travel tickets, hotel, subsistence) are to be covered either from:

• partner of EUCanScreen project providing that these costs are allocated in the budget, or
• host organising the Course

This issue needs to be agreed before the Course, individually, between the Participant and host organisation.
